Yoga History & Philosophy

Yoga History & Philosophy Course Running in Sudbury & Norwich

Introduction to the history & philosophy of Yoga: A seven week course for enthusiasts, or teachers looking to bolster their knowledge.

Course Description:

All yoga practice is in some way shaped by the philosophical ideas that underpin it. This course will serve as an introductory platform for further study, in which we will look specifically at the history of yoga philosophy, understanding how the key philosophical ideas that shape modern yoga classes developed and evolved over time. We will consider history, philosophy, and culture for a broad approach, and will look at what makes yoga philosophy different from other philosophical ideas that also developed from the same time and culture. In doing this we will also touch upon other ideas such as those found in Buddhism, Jainism etc.

This course will then be of interest not only for students of yoga but also for anyone with an interest in Indian history or comparative religious studies.

I am really excited for this course and can’t wait to see you there.

Lesson 6: Modern Yoga

A discussion of the key figures in the transformation of yoga for the modern age.

As you can see from the lesson overview we will be tracking the history of yoga from its origins all the way through to modern times. I believe that understanding how all the different developments shaped one another are vital for understandng what yoga is and I hope to share some of what I know with you.

Developing a knowledge of the history and philosophy of yoga is vital for dedicated students or practitioners of yoga. It can be a fascinating area of study, a rabbit hole of history and information that provides not only an academical knowledge, but can also impact and change how you view your own yoga practice (and life).

Despite this yoga philosophy remains a befuddling mystery for many. In this course I aim to clear the fog so that you can have a solid understanding of how the key ideas in yoga practice and philosophy came about. We will look at the historical / cultural backdrop and the concepts that gave rise to common ideas that we find in yoga philosophy. We will track the main differences between other similar philosophical systems like Buddhism and Jainism so that you can understand what is yoga and what is not.  We will build the framework of understanding that you can use for further study in any areas that might interest you.

This course is for anyone who wants to learn about the history and formation of yoga from a broad academic perspective. It is a discussion and dissection of the tapestry of ideas that occurred in ancient India, of which the Yoga Philosophy and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are one thread.
