Introduction to the history & philosophy of Yoga: A four session introductory course for enthusiasts, or teachers looking to bolster their knowledge. 

Course Description:

Learn how your yoga practice is influenced by the philosophical ideas that underpin it. This course will serve as an introductory platform for further study, in which we will look specifically at the history of yoga philosophy, understanding how the key philosophical ideas that shape modern yoga classes developed and evolved over time. We will consider history, philosophy, and culture for a broad approach, and will look at what makes yoga philosophy different from other philosophical ideas that also developed from the same time and culture. In doing this we will also touch upon other ideas such as those found in Buddhism, Jainism etc.

This concise course covers the history and formation of yoga from a broad academic perspective. It will be of interest not only for students of yoga but also for anyone with an interest in Indian history or comparative religious studies.

The course is spread over four two hour sessions, so that I don’t overload your brain too much in each sitting. We meet monthly with a break in April & you will be joining our current teacher training group. Learning this way means that you can consolidate your knowledge in between sessions.

If there is a particular topic that you are interested in, you can come to just that individual session. However it is recommended that you come to all four if you can as a lot of the themes and ideas that we discuss are all inter related.

You will get my personally prepared handouts on each topic for you to read at home in your own time.

I have been developing my knowledge of Yoga History and Philosophy over many years, and have a degree in Religious Philosophy. I am really excited for this course and can’t wait to see you there.

 

Lesson Overview:

Lesson 1: The Early History of India & the Bhagavad Gita.

A discussion on the influence of Vedic Culture on early forms of Yoga and a look at yoga in the Bhagavad Gita.

Lesson 2: Patanjali Yoga Sutra.

Understanding the Yoga Sutras.

Lesson 3: Tantra & Hatha Yoga.

Looking at the progression of Yoga ideals through the tantric inspired hatha yoga.

Lesson 4: Modern Yoga Developments.

A discussion of the key figures in the transformation of yoga for the modern age.

Lesson 1 ~ the Bhagavad Gita: Saturday 19th February 2022. 10:30 – 12:30.

Lesson 2 ~ Patanjali Yoga Sutra: Saturday 19th March 2022. 10:30 – 12:30.

Lesson 3 ~ Tantra & Hatha Yoga: Sunday 15th May 2022. 10:30 – 12:30.

Lesson 4 ~ Modern Yoga: Sunday 5th June 2022. 10:30 – 12:30.

How much does it cost:

£30 for one individual session or £95 for all four.

You will need:

Essential: An open mind and a willingness to learn. A notepad and pen.

Optional: Snacks and water. A selection of Herbal Teas & Fruit will be provided.
